Priced Risk and Asymmetric Volatility in the Cross-Section of Skewness

چکیده
We investigate the sources of skewness in aggregate risk-factors and the cross-section of stock returns. In an ICAPM setting with conditional volatility, we find theoretical time series predictions on the relationships among volatility, returns, and skewness for priced risk factors. Market returns resemble these predictions; however, size, bookto-market, and momentum factor returns show alternative behavior, leading us to conclude these factors are not priced risks. We link aggregate risk and skewness to individual stocks and find empirically that the risk aversion effect manifests in individual stock skewness. Additionally, we find several firm characteristics that explain stock skewness. Smaller firms, value firms, highly levered firms, and firms with poor credit ratings have more positive skewness. ∗Stern School of Business, New York University, [email protected] and [email protected].

The Skewness Premium and The Asymmetric Volatility Puzzle
This paper uses a general equilibrium model to study the source and reward of asymmetric volatility or skewness of market returns in an exchange economy. In particular, the dividend growth rate is modeled as a stochastic volatility process and the representative agent is characterized by Epstein-Zin preferences. The equilibrium equity premium, risk-free rate, and asymmetric volatility (measured...
متن کاملContinuous Beta, Discontinuous Beta, and the Cross-Section of Expected Stock Returns∗
Aggregate stock market returns are naturally categorized as either small or large movements. In the continuous-time model setup, we can formally identify these movements as continuous or discontinuous (jump). Using a large, novel, highfrequency dataset, I investigate how individual stocks respond to these two different market changes. I also explore whether the different systematic risks associ...
متن کاملHorizon - specific macroeconomic risks and the cross section of expected returns ∗ †
We show that decomposing macroeconomic risks across horizon is key to uncover a tight link between risk premia and the real economy. Exposure in four-year returns to innovations in macroeconomic growth and volatility with a matching half-life of over four years is priced in a wide variety of test assets. Shorter-term risks are not priced. Importantly, we show that long-term growth and volatilit...
متن کاملAsset Pricing Implications of Volatility Term Structure Risk
I find that stocks with high sensitivities to changes in the V IX slope exhibit high returns on average. The price of V IX slope risk is approximately 2.5% annually, statistically significant and cannot be explained by other common factors, such as the market excess return, size, book-to-market, momentum, liquidity, market volatility, and the variance risk premium. I provide a theoretical model...
متن کاملThe Factor Structure of Realized Volatility and its Implications for Option Pricing
The cross-section of realized return volatilities of US equities between 1965-2004 is well described by a linear factor structure. We show that the identified factor structure has important cross-sectional pricing implications for variance swap contracts. The principal volatility factor accounts for almost 40% of the cross-sectional variation in realized stock volatilities and earns a significa...
